About Angus Malcomson

Bio
Angus Malcomson is a contemporary composer currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). Deeply inspired by multicultural collaboration and improvisational practices, Malcomson aims to integrate these interests into his work as an aspiring film and media composer.

He is an active member of UCSB’s vibrant performance community, performing as a keyboardist in a student-led R&B cover band and as a nay player in the university’s long-running Middle Eastern Ensemble. These ensembles have provided not only a space for artistic growth, but also meaningful creative communities that continue to shape his perspective as a composer, performer, and collaborator.

Malcomson has written original scores for student films and visiting performers at UCSB’s College of Creative Studies, and his compositional style reflects an openness to experimentation and cultural exchange. His music frequently employs minimalist textures, improvisational frameworks, and aleatoric elements, while remaining grounded in both classical training and contemporary practice. He finds creative depth in simplicity; whether exploring variations on a 12-bar blues progression or crafting music for solo instruments with spare melodic lines.

His experience as a performer directly informs his compositional voice, even when writing in styles distinct from those he plays. Drawing influence from the diverse musical settings he inhabits, Malcomson seeks to create music that bridges genres, traditions, and artistic identities. He hopes to continue fostering collaborative environments that are as creatively rich and personally meaningful as the ones that have shaped his own journey.
